Shark Week 2012: 5 Incredible Photos Of Great White Sharks [SLIDESHOW]

Shark Week 2012 is here, and the Discovery Channel is featuring amazing photos and videos about a variety of sharks. However, in particular, they are focusing on the great white shark -- one of the most misunderstood hunters in the animal kingdom.

Great white sharks are phenomenal hunters that are known to breach, or jump, out of the water after their prey. They can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour and jump more than 10 feet in the air.

In addition, great white sharks have one of the strongest bites in the world -- a 2008 study found that they can bite with a force of more than 20,000 newtons. For comparison, the tyrannosaurus rex is thought to have had a bite of approximately 35,000 newtons.

However, despite their fearsome reputation, great white sharks are not as deadly as people may think. They do not attack indiscriminately, as the movie Jaws has led some people to believe. Instead, most attacks appear to be cases of mistaken identity, believing the silhouette of a surfer on a board to be that of a seal.

Here are some photos of these creatures.
