Coined by media outlets as the "Sweeney Todd" Cannibal Lovers, trio Jorge Negromonte, 50, wife Isabele Pires, 51, and his mistress Bruna da Silva, 25, were arrested by Brazilian police after allegedly killing their victims before serving their remains in baked pies.

According to police, the three lovers of Pernambuco, north-east Brazil, are said to have lured women into their home under the pretense of seeking a nanny for the house. Instead of a job, the victims had their head chopped off. The bodies were then dismembered, quartered, and even stuffed into empanadas to be eaten later. That's not all-not only did the "Sweeny Todd" Cannibal Lovers eat the empanadas, they even sold the gruesome stuffed pastries to neighbors for 30p each.

Appearing before a judge for the first time in their Pernambuco town, the trio is facing charges for murdering Jessica da Silva, Alexandra Falcao, and Gisele da Silva. While they have yet to plea, the police have already reported that the alleged cannibals already admitted to killing an additional six victims. In addition, the killers also told police that they belonged to a sect known as "Cartel," comprising of members that believe in the need to purify the world and lower the world's population.

Perhaps the most horrifying killing of all is that of 17-year-old Jessica da Silva in 2008 while the young woman lived in their house with her one-year-old baby daughter. After killing the teenage mom, the baby daughter was forced to eat the pies of her mother's meat as a "purification ritual."

For the authorities, the case was a long mystery of missing people. It was not until a credit card belonging to Jessica da Silva was swiped did police get a hold of the suspects. Believing there was foul play involved, the police dug up the garden and discovered two bodies. The victims were identified to be local girls Alexandra Falcao, 20, and Gisele da Silva, 30.

Finally, a 50-page handwritten book was also found in the house. Inside, disturbing notes and drawings shared horrific details of cannibalism.

Despite the mounting evidence, the sheer inhumanity of the crimes is still hard to believe. Jorge Negromonte's brother, Irenaeus, pleased that his brother was a vegetarian. "'His vegetarianism means it would be a contradiction for him to eat human flesh."

However, Negromonte's other brother, Emanuel, had noticed ominous signs before. "'As a child, Jorge was a normal teenager and had friends. But by age 17, he designed comics that had scenes of violence against women."

Five witnesses will appear before the judge to give evidence of the relationship between the three murderers.

The defending attorney filed a claim of insanity for Negromonte, his wife, and his mistress.

What makes the murders in Brazil so striking are its similarities to the fictional character Sweeney Todd of Victorian London. A demented barber, Todd would cut the throat of his victims and have accomplice Mrs. Lovett bake the pies using the flesh of the victims.

Finally, let's not forget that this is just the latest bizarre case of cannibalism to occur this year.

Earlier this week, veteran NYPD cop Gilberto Valle was arrested after allegedly planning to kidnap and eat 100 women.

Earlier this year, naked "bath salts zombie" Rudy Eugene viciously bit off another man's face and was only suppressed after the police opened fire and killed the attacker.
