Anne Hathaway Diet: How The 'Obsessive' Diet Made Her Lose 25 Pounds For 'Les Miserables'
Young and talented, Anne Hathaway has demonstrated time and again her abilities as an actress to completely become her character. For her latest role in "Les Misérables" as Fantine, a young mother turned prostitute dying from tuberculosis in Paris during the 1800s, Hathaway not only cut her long hair, but had also lost a staggering total of 25 pounds from her already thin figure.

Initial rumors suggested that Anne Hathaway adopted a regime that limited her nutrition to no more than 500 calories a day (an average woman is recommended 2000 daily calories). However, according to a statement from Hathaway's rep to The Huffington Post, a special diet regime was required but the 500 calorie ceiling was "a huge exaggeration."
In an interview with Vogue, Anne Hathaway opened up about her diet ahead of "Les Misérables" and revealed that the exaggeration wasn't huge after all. Hathaway said, "I had to be obsessive about it-- the idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience-- and I don't judge it in any way-- it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."
Anne Hathaway also expressed other challenges the diet had brought. "I was in such a state of deprivation-physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed [...] It took me weeks till I felt like myself again."
The diet called for an initial "strict cleanse" to lose ten pounds before the shooting of "Les Misérables" would begin. Next, Anne Hathaway continued with the plan and lost an addition 15 pounds by taking on a measured diet that included dried squares of oatmeal paste.
"Les Misérables" will hit theaters on Christmas 2012.
