Mastiff Dog Mauls Firefighter Owner Dawn Brown After One Week Adoption
Dawn Brown, a firefighter of Big Rock, Illinois, was found dead after suffering large bites to the neck by a pet mastiff she and her husband had adopted from another family member just a week ago.
Dawn Brown's husband, Bob, found her on Monday, 4:15 p.m., after he returned home and immediately acted to resuscitate his wife to no avail.
According to Kane County Sheriff police Lt. Pat Gengler, "It was an extremely muscular-looking dog with a large head. It looked big, strong."

Authorities are not sure whether the adopted mastiff had ever acted violently or demonstrated erratic behavior. According to sources, the dog's previous owner did not give it away because of aggressive behavior, but simply because they could not look after it. Investigations on what prompted the attack continue.
Other than the large mastiff, Dawn and Bob Brown also own a boxer and a pit bull mix. Now, all three dogs are in the custody of Kane County animal control. No decision has been made yet on whether the mastiff will be kept alive, but Lt. Pat Gengler says the ultimate decision will likely be up to the Dawn's husband.
Affectionately nicknamed 'Mother Dawn' by her coworkers, Bristol Kendall Fire Protection District Chief Michael Hitzemann said this about Dawn Brown, "She was just a very kind, very caring person. She mothered everybody, and tried to take care of everybody."
Dawn first began training witht he Big Rock Fire Proection District with husband Bob in 2003. She has since worked at Bristol Kendall Fire Protection District since 2007.
