Astronaut Chris Hadfield was launched into orbit this December for an extended mission on the International Space Station. Serving as the flight engineer for the space station's "Expedition 34" crew, Hadfield will later take charge of the station's "Expedition 35" mission. A momentous occasion, Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency will be the very first Canadian space commander.

In fact, Hadfield's achievement has even attracted the attention of another Canadian space pioneer, Actor William Shatner, also known as TV show Star Trek's original Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise.

Shatner wrote to Chris Hadfield via Twitter on Thursday, January 3: "@Cmdr_Hadfield Are you tweeting from space? MBB." Shatner signed off with his signature, "My Best, Bill."

Hadfield wasted no time to relay a message back to Mr. James T. Kirk. "@WilliamShatner Yes, Standard Orbit, Captain. And we're detecting signs of life on the surface."

In fact, the Canadian Space Agency (@csa_asc) also joined in to speak with Shatner, "@WilliamShatner @cmdr_hadfield Of course he is! And doing a great job at it!"

A delightful exchange between two Canadian space buffs check out the full thread between William Shatner and Chris Hadfield here:
