Demi Lovato has checked herself into a sober house in Los Angeles, determined not to fall back into habits that included anorexia, bulimia and cutting.

"I wasn't going to continue to be alive if I continued to treat my body the way I was," Lovato told E! News, recalling her decision to check into rehab. "It's a daily journey and it's definitely going to be a struggle that I'll have to deal with for the rest of my life," she admitted. "Sometimes I think, 'Why couldn't I have been normal?'"

"She's very smart" for checking into a rehab, a source close to the situation told People. "She takes whatever steps she needs to make sure she stays healthy."

The 20-year-old singer is determined to stay sober for her work as an "X Factor" judge. In order to ensure she stays clean, Lovato - who found out she had bipolar disorder when she was in rehab between Nov. 2010 and Jan. 2011 - has been renting a room in a sober house for more than a year, according to People.

"I'm not going to be perfect, but... if I can make it through the day, that's all that matters," the bubbly brunette told E! "I was doubled over, just in pain. I remember thinking, This is kind of my cry for help back then, because I hadn't spoken to anyone about these issues and I hadn't gotten the help that I needed."
