Ambo Ella, a spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, said that about 10 monkeys carried out a surprise attack in Toddang Pulu village.
A 16-year-old boy was badly bitten when the monkeys attacked the village Monday, and he is being treated at the village hospital.
Ella believed that the monkeys that attacked the village came from a nearby forest protected by a local tribe. It's unclear, though, why the monkeys, which are usually afraid of humans and flee when they hear human voices, came out of nowhere and attacked.
Local authorities are investigating what prompted the monkeys to attack the village, which caused panic among villagers.
