A lion kills a heron at a zoo in Amsterdam and is caught on tape. Shocked visitors watch as a lion pounces on a blue heron as it tries to take flight. According to the YouTube video description, the footage was shot by a Dutch family at the Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam, KPop Starz reports. The lion kills the heron as a stunned crowd witnesses the attack. The video in which a lion kills a heron at the Amsterdam zoo was uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday.

In the video, the lions are seen perched under an overhang in the far corner of their enclosure when they spot a blue heron, a large wading bird common in wetlands, near the water. The lions react by getting up from their perch and bolting towards the bird. One of the female lions reaches the heron first and, as the bird tries to take flight, pounces on it, snatching the bird out of the air and pulling it to the ground. The bird is heard squealing as the lions fight over its body. The crowd gathered around the enclosure gasps in disbelief.

According to HyperVocal, the video is actually a repost from last year. Even so, the action feels fresh.

Watch for yourself:

One of the most famous animal attacks on caught on video came to us in 2007, when a family on safari in Africa caught footage of a pride of lions attacking a small water buffalo, only to have the other water buffalo gang up on the lions. Then, a crocodile lunges from the nearby water and snatches the same young water buffalo, leading to an all-out tug-of-war between lion, crocodile and buffalo. The video, titled Battle at Kruger, won Youtube Best Eyewitness Video award. The amazing footage was shot in South Africa's Kruger National Park and was featured on National Geographic, Animal Planet, ABC, NBC and MSNBC, according to the YouTube page.
