Lil Wayne Epilepsy: Alive After Near Fatal Seizures Caused By Disorder, Not Sizzurp [PHOTOS & VIDEO]

By iScienceTimes Staff Reporter on March 29, 2013 11:32 AM EDT

Lil Wayne's epilepsy caused his near death experience. His recent and severe seizures, reportedly induced by the cough syrup and soda mixture sizzurp, was actually caused by the rapper's epileptic condition. The poor rapper -- "poor" used metaphorically -- spent six days in the hospital after the incident, most of it in intensive care and in critical condition. TMZ even reported that he had received his Last Rites (just in time for Holy Week!). But, it turns out, we may not have the whole story: A new statement by the rapper himself claims that epilepsy, not sizzurp, was the primary cause of his seizures.

Lil Wayne epilepsy is news to us. It's not something he's talked about before. But, in the wake of his near-death scare -- which the media blew out of proportion, but not by all that much -- he's finally going to come clean about his condition.

"I'm an epileptic, so I'm prone to seizures," Lil Wayne admitted in a radio interview with Power 106.

"This isn't my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seven seizure. I've had a bunch of seizures ... y'all just never hear about it. This time it got real bad because I got three of 'em in a row, and on the third one, my heart rate went down to, like, 30 percent. Basically, I could've died soon. That's why it was so serious."

So, did Lil Wayne's epilepsy cause his seizures, or did sizzurp? According to the rapper, it was all the former.

"The reason for the seizures is just plain stress, no rest and overworking myself."

As for sizzurp, he has nothing to say -- no formal denial, certainly no admission. Just hard work and hard epilepsy.

Lil Wayne is a kind-hearted rapper, and he had no ill will toward TMZ for the false rumors it propagated about his last rites.

"I can't be upset at that. I get upset at my kids when they do things that I tell 'em not to do; I can't get upset at TMZ for doing what they do."

And TMZ wasn't entirely off. These seizures were more severe than usual.

"I had three in a row and on the third one my heart rate went down to like 30 per cent. Basically, I could've died," the rapper said.

Normally, his team knows how to handle his seizures. It was their unusual severity that caused his hospitalization this time.

Lil Wayne's epilepsy is one in a very long string of famous seizure sufferers, who in earlier times were often believed to be possessed by demons -- or religious ecstasy. Other epileptics of Lil Wayne's caliber include Vladimir Lenin, Pope Pius IX, Neil Young, Prince, Prince Erik (Duke of Vastmanland), Dostoyevsky, and -- most famously -- Julius Caesar. So Lil Wayne at least has good company -- and you can be sure that none of those others drank sizzurp.

Epilepsy or not, Lil Wayne's latest album, "I Am Not a Human Being II," came out this week. Thankfully, the rapper was still here for it.
