Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, are the suspects responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing.

At 11 p.m. Thursday night, an all-out manhunt for Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev prompted a city-wide lockdown. According to the Huffington Post, the Tsarnaev brothers shot a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer in the head. The suspects then hopped into the dead officer's campus police cruiser and fled from the scene. Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev then robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store before carjacking a Mercedes ML SUV and briefly kidnapping the driver.

Given the escalating situation, the city of Boston halted all transportation entering or leaving the city, shutting down local and nationwide train and bus services. Schools and universities are shuttered for a day as Boston residents are asked to remain at home.

"There is a massive manhunt under way," Gov. Patrick said. "We are asking people to shelter in place."

"We believe this man to be a terrorist," said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people."

Following a long night of violence that including a horrifying firefight involving thrown explosive devices, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was eventually killed. According to examiners, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was critically wounded during the shootout. What's more, Tamerlan Tsarnaev wore an explosive on his chest, suggesting an intent to avoid a live capture.

19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains at large. According to the latest information from the Norwich Bulletin, suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev may have found a way to escape the state.

The Norwich Bulletin reports:

Connecticut and Massachusetts state police are searching for a gray Honda CRV, with Massachusetts license plate 316-ES9, that might be occupied by Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Police said they believe Tsarnaev is headed to New York.

According to the Washington Times, the Tsarnaev brothers are from the Russian region of Chechnya, an area described as a hotbed for separatist extremism.
