A photo of the Martian surface shows the tread marks from where one of NASA's rovers crisscrossed the sunburnt terrain. The vehicle's tires left a curious pattern in the dirt, which looks like a giant drawing of a penis. Which of NASA's rovers is leaving naughty messages on our neighboring planet's surface?

Daily Mail reports that NASA's website experienced difficulties after the photo was posted due to the growing demand of people wanting to view the image. While NASA has not issued an official comment about the photo, they did upload a higher resolution version of the image to their website.

The picture, also shared on Reddit with the caption "Mars Rover = $800m, Team to operate = $1bn. Drawing a penis on the surface of another planet = priceless," shows the red-brown surface of Mars with the tracks of the rover marking its terrain.

The rovers, named Spirit and Opportunity, are like robotic geologists for the Martian landscape, combing the terrain for information about the planet and relaying their findings back to Earth. The two rovers first landed on Mars in 2004; Spirit, however, became immobile in 2009.

The two were joined by a third NASA rover, Curiosity, in Aug. 2012.

It's uncertain which of the active rovers left the giant penis behind, but it's clear the drawing was caused by the maneuvering of one or both of them of them. Whether guided by human hands or running on automatic instructions, it's good to know that mankind's interstellar baby steps have progressed to the space-version of defacing a bathroom wall.
