Quickly responding to the cancer, doctors have scheduled Angie Everhart for treatment on Tuesday, May 14. Angie Everhart will undergo thyroid surgery, also known as a thyroidectomy.
A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of the cancer affected portions of the thyroid gland. A common treatment among thyroid cancer patients, the aim of a thyroidectomy is the swift removal of cancer growth in the thyroid gland. In more severe cases, the entire thyroid gland can be removed in a total thyroidectomy.
Side-effects of the surgery include: the a temporary or permanent change to the voice, temporary or permanent low calcium count in the body, or the need for lifelong thyroid hormone replacement. Bleeding, infection, and airway obstructions are uncommon.
Patients are prescribed to take daily thyroid hormone pills, levothyroxine, following the surgery. A benefit of the thyroidectomy is a doctor's ability to watch for disease recurrence by performing radioiodine scans and thyroglobulin blood tests.
Fellow model Brook Burke underwent thyroid surgery last year. Sharing her life with fans, Brooke wrote on her Facebook fan page: "I'm getting ready this week for my surgery and am planning on a speedy recovery. What a crazy time, but I am surrounded with love and support and that really makes a world of difference."
Angie Everhart became immensely popular as a redheaded teen model on the cover of Elle and Glamour. Everhart also starred in films including "Last Action Hero," and "Payback."
