The event occurred in Orosi, Calif., a neighborhood in California's Central Valley about 30 miles southeast of Fresno. The three children, who were not injured during the shootings, included two boys ages 11 and 13, and one girl, 8. According to Newser, the 8-year-old granddaughter of Anthony Alvarez called 911 just after 4:30 in the morning on Monday to report the shooting.
When authorities arrived, they found Anthony Alvarez dead. CBS 47 reports that Anthony Alvarez was a Vietnam veteran who received a purple heart for his service. The tragic event, which took place on the early morning of Memorial Day, is still under investigation, and Anthony Alvarez's motive for shooting his two daughters is still unknown.
People who knew the family were shocked to hear about the shootings.
"They were good people, they were good children," Melissa Gutierrez, a family friend, told CBS 47. "They got brought up real good [sic]."
Sgt. Chris Douglass told the local news outlet that Valerie Alvarez was taken to a Fresno hospital and was stabilized, and in surgery. The three grandchildren were taken to their father, who was at work at the time of the shooting.
