Wendy's Pretzel Burger: How Many Calories Are In The New Sandwich? [REPORT]

By Staff Reporter on May 30, 2013 6:04 PM EDT

Rumors of a new Wendy's pretzel burger are getting foodies excited and it's not even for sale yet. The popular fast food restaurant remains mum on the new pretzel bacon cheeseburger's details.

"We're not sharing details of this sandwich today," says Wendy's spokesman Denny Lynch, in an email. "It's not in any of our restaurants."

Despite Wendy's efforts to downplay their sandwich before its official release, fast-food fans can't stop talking about the new Wendy's pretzel burger.

"This could be a very, very big deal," says Christopher Muller, professor of hospitality at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration. "I don't know why, but there's nothing else on the market quite like it."If it's a hit, he says, others are guaranteed to follow."

The pretzel bacon cheeseburger is exactly as it sounds -- take a bacon cheeseburger and replace the hamburger bun with soft pretzel bread.

An odd concoction, pretzel roll sandwiches are actually more popular than one might assume. According to Nation's Restaurant News senior editor Mark Brandau, pretzels are a growing trend in the casual dining food industry. Sandwich chain Blimpie first introduced a line of pretzel bread rolls a couple years ago. Pretzel roll sandwiches are also extremely popular throughout much of Europe, especially Germany.

For Wendy's, the new pretzel burger promises fresh interest in the brand again. According to Janney Capital Markets research analyst Mark Kalinowski, the new pretzel bacon cheeseburger is one of Wendy's top-selling limited-time offerings in decades during its market test in Miami. Kalinowski upgraded Wendy's stock from "neutral" to "buy" following indications of the Wendy's pretzel burger sales performance.

While a Wendy's pretzel burger certainly sounds promising, how is it to eat? Between the soft, dense, chewy and high carb pretzel roll is cheese, bacon, ground beef, sauces and vegetables.

Wendy's has yet to unveil the official calorie count for its latest sandwich item, but family restaurant chain Friendly's once offered a version of the pretzel burger as well. According to Daily Burn, the pretzel burger by Friendly's boasted a staggering 1420 calories and 79 grams of fat, 190 mg of cholesterol, 2040 mg of sodium, and a total of 119 g of carbs.
