The incident occurred near San Gabriel River Parkway and Rose Hills Road. 22-year-old Efren Velasquez was driving 13-year-old Braulio Duque, his friend Gilbert Henriquez, and two other females in a Nissan Sentra. An unidentified woman drove 12-year-old Humberto Flores in the Honda Civic. Tragically, three in the Sentra were killed immediately while two females are hospitalized. The woman and Humberto Flores are in critical condition.

"I heard a bang," recalled witness Albert Delgado. "I saw bodies everywhere. I was trying to help the kids. I stayed with one -- he was breathing."

"I thought it was just debris from the vehicle until I got closer -- it was bodies," Delgado continued.

According to preliminary investigations, Efren Velasquez traveled north along San Gabriel River Parkway when the Nissan Sentra crossed over the center line and onto oncoming traffic. The Honda Civic travelling southbound slammed right into the Nissan Sentra in a violent head-on impact.

A tragic end to what was supposed to be a happy occasion, parents and teachers at Carmela Elementary School mourned for the children.

A vigil was held Friday at 7 p.m. for friends and family of the victims.
