BBC reports that the men were able to break the toddler's fall enough that she escaped the terrible plunge unscathed -- minus a small scratch over her eye. At least two of the men, however, suffered injuries, as witnessed in the video of the falling toddler that shows one man grasping his arm in pain after the 2-year-old fell onto his arm. Another man holds his neck.
Parents of the young girl, named Qiqi, said they stepped out of the apartment while Qiqi slept. At some point, the slumbering toddler woke up and managed to get onto the apartment bedroom's windowsill. That's when the mail delivery men heard her crying and saw her on the ledge of the fifth-floor window. They sprang into action, forming a cluster below the girl in order to buffer her fall.
This is the second falling toddler saved this week. iScience Times reports that on Wednesday, the daughter of famed baseball manager Joe Torre caught a 16-month-old baby who fell from a second-story fire escape in New York's Brooklyn borough. Cristina Torre, a Montessori school teacher who chanced upon the helpless toddler, put out her arms, and the baby simply landed in her grasp.
According to police, the toddler had removed a piece of cardboard that was blocking the window of the apartment and then crawled out onto the fire escape. It then tumbled onto an awning of a yogurt shop, and then slid off of the awning. That's when Torre caught the falling toddler in her arms.
