Anthony Nicodemo is a gay high school basketball coach in New York. On Monday, the 35-year-old resident of Yonkers, a city in Westchester County about 17 miles north of downtown Manhattan, came out to his Saunders Trade and Tech High School team. Instead of rejecting him, the players embraced Anthony Nicodemo.

SB Nation reports that Anthony Nicodemo grew up in a traditional Italian neighborhood in New York. As a kid, Nicodemo heard gay jokes and slurs, and quickly learned that it was best to hide his sexuality. But when he came out to his high school basketball team on Monday, he was anything but reserved.

"What a day! The support of my family, peers, players and media have been awesome," Nicodemo tweeted Monday. He followed it up with another tweet: "Not sure where this all goes from here, but with all of you standing behind me, I feel confident!"

And the media is ready to tell his story. Anthony Nicodemo appeared on "Good Day New York" Wednesday morning to talk about his coming out.

"I think it's a new story for a reason, if it was the norm and there was nothing to it, we wouldn't be sitting here right now," he said on the show. He mentions that stereotypes of masculinity in sports make it hard for gay athletes to feel comfortable coming out.

When "Good Day New York" host Rosanna Scotto asked him if he was nervous coming out to his team, he said: "Ya, it was definitely a little nerve racking. My concern was the kids...I definitely went in a little nervous."
