Pepsi flavored Cheetos are Japan's next big thing! Why? Well, why not?

According to Frito-Lay spokesperson Jeff Dahncke, the curious new Pepsi flavored Cheetos were launched exclusively in Japan last month and will be sold there for a limited time. Although there are no plans to bring the Pepsi flavored Cheetos to the U.S. market, the snack giant is clearly pushing the envelop in flavor creativity.

According to a reviewer of the Pepsi flavored Cheetos, the taste is very unique and actually gives off a little fizzy sensation.

"The first sensation, which I did not expect, was a very acidic bite," commented the reviewer. "It tries to capture the citrus notes of Pepsi, but it's over the top. Too lemony. The sweeter cola flavor is there, but it's subtler and overpowered by the intense citrus."

Odd flavor combinations have been a growing trend in the food consumer market. Taco Bell introduced Doritos flavored taco shells, Oreos introduced watermelon flavored creme sandwich cookies, and local foodies in New York City have generated a lot of buzz over new treats including the cronut and the ramenburger.

What makes these odd food innovations popular?

According to products specialist Lynn Dornblaser of research firm Mintel, Pepsi flavored Cheetos possesses a distinct appeal to consumers with short attention spans. "Consumers all want something absolutely new that's never been seen before."

"There's something to be said about products that elicit an 'ew' response," Dornblaser explained. If a product can deliver an impactful shock factor, there's a chance that someone will post it on their Facebook to share the reaction.

Food scientist Steven Witherly, author of "Why Humans Like Junk Food: The Inside Story on Why You Like Your Favorite Foods," dives into the thought a little further. According to Witherly, "The mouth doesn't anticipate the combo, which actually makes it more pleasurable to the brain. If something looks like a Cheeto but tastes like a Pepsi, it wakes up your brain."
